Description
BROAD LANE CANAL BRIDGE, also known as Bridge 222, is a canal bridge built around 1780 for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features an elliptical arch. Below the parapet, there is a raised ashlar band with renewed ashlar coping on the southeast part. The bridge has end pilasters topped with ashlar blocks that terminate the parapet, and there is a buttress at the northeast angle. Underneath the bridge, large kerbstones line the towing path on the east side of the canal. The first section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Yorkshire was opened in 1777, with engineers James Brindley and John Longbottom from Halifax involved in the project.
