SE2535 BROAD LANE, Kirkstall 714-1/21/896 Broad Lane Canal Bridge (Bridge 222) 05/08/76 (Formerly Listed as: BROAD LANE, Kirkstall Broad Lane Canal Bridge)

Canal bridge. c1780. For the Leeds and Liverpool Canal company. Coursed squared gritstone. Elliptical arch; raised ashlar band below parapet with ashlar coping (renewed to SE part); end pilasters surmounted by ashlar blocks which terminate parapet; buttress at NE angle. Under the bridge, large kerbstones to towing path on E side of canal. The first Yorkshire stage of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was opened in 1777; James Brindley and John Longbottom (of Halifax) were engineers to the company.
