Description
The weir on the River Clyde at New Lanark dates from 1785 and has undergone repairs, the most recent in June 1994. It consists of a submerged stone and timber structure with later concrete repairs, designed to channel water through a rock-cut tunnel at the southeast end of New Lanark village. This tunnel is approximately 250 yards long and 12 feet in diameter, directing water into the lade, which measures 22 feet wide and 6 feet deep. The weir features a segmental-arched opening with a coped parapet above where the water exits into New Lanark.
The village lade has a rectangular cross-section with masonry walls. Since 1980, the lower sections of these walls have been rebuilt using engineering brick, and the copes have been renewed. Railings have also been replaced to match the design typical of New Lanark. There are modern sluices connected to the weir, as well as at the Mechanics' Shop, No 3 Mill, the site of No 4 Mill, and No 1 Mill, with tunnels leading to the wheel and turbine sites.
