Description
3 and 6-7 Caithness Row in New Lanark is a significant building constructed between 1792 and 1793, with the Counting House added around 1810 to 1816. The structure features a two-storey, twelve-bay terrace of mill workers' houses that gently curves and has a gabled design. At the northern end, there is a two-bay, piend-roofed Counting House that is bow-ended. The houses are one room deep and are situated on a sloping site. The exterior is made of random sandstone rubble, with coursed rubble used for the Counting House, and includes droved and stugged ashlar dressings. The southern gable is harled, and the building has long and short quoins. The fenestration is regular, featuring tabbed ashlar margins. The eastern elevation has four symmetrical three-bay units, with stone steps leading to central timber-boarded doors.
The Counting House has a three-bay bowed façade on the northern side, with a central timber-boarded door flanked by windows. The side elevations have two bays each, and there is a stone forestair leading to a timber-boarded door on the first floor of the eastern elevation.
The windows throughout predominantly feature twelve-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are gablehead and ridge ashlar-coped rubble stacks with small clay cans. The pavement at the front elevation is made of granite sets.
Inside the Counting House, there is a double-height oval room on the first floor, which includes curved timber-panelled doors leading to the entrance and a cupboard, surmounted by a niche. The interior retains an original iron safe and shelving, as well as an original cast-iron fireplace.
