Description
9-10 and 13 Caithness Row in New Lanark is a two-storey, 12-bay gabled terrace of mill workers' houses built between 1792 and 1793, with restoration and internal alterations carried out by Ian G Lindsay in 1966. The houses are constructed from random rubble with dressed and rough ashlar dressings, and the gables are harled. The building features regular fenestration, except for the ground floor of the west elevation. The northeast elevation has four symmetrical three-bay units, with stone steps leading to central timber-boarded doors flanked by windows.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The gablehead and ridge stacks are topped with ashlar coping and short black clay cans, and the skews are also ashlar-coped. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the pavement on the east elevation is made of granite sets.
Additionally, there is a former abattoir located to the east, which is a single-storey, roughly square-plan detached structure from the early 19th century, featuring a roof ventilator. This building was later repurposed as a wash-house with water closets and is now used as garages.
