New Buildings, New Lanark Road, New Lanark

New Buildings, located on New Lanark Road in New Lanark, was built in 1798 with alterations around 1800 and restored in 1978. This four-storey, 13-bay terrace, designed in a classical Palazzo style, serves as tenements for mill workers. The structure features slightly advanced end bays and a pedimented central three bays topped with a colonnaded bellcote. There is also a later four-storey, six-bay terrace attached to the northwest gable. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with droved and stugged ashlar dressings, including an eaves course and a blocking course on the outer bays, along with long and short quoins and regular fenestration with tabbed margins.

On the southwest elevation, which is the principal facade, there are two steps leading to the central timber-panelled main door, flanked by sidelights within a pilastered architrave. Above this is a segmental pediment that originally contained a clock plaque. The gable pediment features an oval oculus, and the bellcote has a rusticated plinth with paired unfluted columns supporting a lead dome and weathervane, with the bell dated 1786. Additional doorways with timber boarded doors are present, with steps leading up to those on the right due to the sloping ground. The later section of the terrace to the west is stepped back with doors at ground level.

The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing in timber and sash cases. The building has coped ridge stacks with small black cans, ashlar-coped skews, and a grey slate roof, along with small roof lights and cast-iron rainwater goods.
