Description

Coate's Brush Factory is a former flour mill that dates back to the 17th century and was enlarged in the 19th century. The building features roughcast on the right side and pebbledash on the left, both applied over rubble. It has a slate roof with coped verges on the right gable end and a brick stack at the center where it meets a later addition, along with a pair of overlapping brick stacks to the center right of the addition.

The original block is located on the left (north) and has a waterwheel that is concealed by later additions or the gable end, with a mill leat above it. The factory is three storeys high and has irregular window arrangements on the earlier block, which are partially hidden by sheds. Notable features include a blocked 3-light hollow chamfer stone mullioned window with a hoodmould to the left of the entrance in the shed, and a 4-light window to the right of a wide plank door. The addition has two bays on the right, with some leaded iron casements. The entrance is centrally located in the entire range and features a plank door with remnants of trelliswork and a wooden porch.

Inside, there is an overshot wheel with a cast iron paddle and shaft drive that remains in use and is in good condition. The interior also retains match-boarded partitions and features from the 19th century. The factory produces wooden hair brushes and has changed little since the last century, making it a notable historical survival.
