Description

Mansion Cottage is a house and outbuilding, now with a stable at the rear, located approximately 10 meters west of the Roundhay Park stables in Leeds. It dates from the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed gritstone featuring herring-bone tooling, with red brick in a 1:4 garden wall bond on the left side. The front has a stone slate roof, while the rear is covered with small blue slates.

The cottage is two stories high with two bays, and there is a single-storey bay on the right. The main house has a central door flanked by windows on both the ground and first floors, all featuring large sawn-stone sills and lintels, with a ridge stack on the right. The right bay includes a small window with a sawn stone lintel on the left. The windows are irregular, with 19th and 20th-century casements. At the rear, the right bay projects, and there is a blocked cart entrance with a flat voussoir arch, which now serves as a stable door and window. The windows on the left and above mirror those at the front.

The interior has not been inspected. It is possibly the former Park farmhouse, adapted as the gardener's cottage for the Roundhay Park estate, with gardens to the south. The estate was purchased by Leeds Corporation in 1872, leading to alterations.
