Description
This building, located on the north side of the road approximately 40 metres west of its junction with Main Street in Aberford, is a former water mill that has been converted into a garage. It likely dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations. Constructed from squared magnesian limestone with a tiled roof, the building has a rectangular plan and is situated on a slope between the road above and the riverside meadow below.
It is two storeys tall with a basement and consists of three bays. The front facing the road features inserted garage doors at ground level and a loading door above. The right gable shows the exposed arched top of an opening for the exit of a watercourse at basement level, with two square windows at ground-floor level (one of which is blind or blocked), and an arched two-light window with Y-tracery at first-floor level, along with a chimney at the gable.
On the rear side, which faces the river, there is a large semi-circular shallow recess at basement level with a square opening in the center, indicating the position of a former waterwheel. To the left, there is one square window, and above it, two similar windows at ground-floor level, as well as a blocked small horizontal window under the eaves. A photograph in "Aberford in Times Past" by A. G. Bennett, T. Hayton, and K. Hewitt shows the waterwheel and goit, along with lettering on the east gable wall that reads: "H. MOON (COR)N MILLER (ME)RCHANT."
