Description

Church House is a house dating from the late 18th century, with additions made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, now divided into three dwellings. It is constructed of coursed squared magnesian limestone with quoins, and has a modern tiled roof. The building is long and rectangular, with a double-depth plan. The original part of the house, assumed to be the north side, is symmetrical and arranged over three storeys with three bays. It features a wide six-panel door with a moulded surround, protected by a Tuscan porch. Above the door is a small round-headed stairlight with glazing bars, and a similar window at the second floor. The other windows on this side are 12-pane sashes, with those on the second floor divided into leaves of 4 and 8 smaller panes. There is a plain doorway at the right-hand end of the ground floor. A two-storey, two-bay addition to the east has a doorway with a surround of two plain columns and a cornice, a plain doorway to the right, an inserted window, and a 12-pane sash on the ground floor. The first floor has similar windows, with small inserted windows flanking the sash. A two-storey, single-bay addition to the west has a 12-pane sash on the ground floor and a round-headed window with glazing bars. The first floor has a similar sash flanked by small inserted windows, and the second floor has an 8-pane sash. Gable coping with kneelers and ridge chimneys are present. The rear elevation has a large glazed porch covering most of the ground floor of the original house, glazed double doors in each addition, and mostly 12-pane sashed windows. The east end addition has three bays on this side, whilst the west end has 16-pane sashes at the second floor. Internally, the original house contains a wide staircase with slim balusters. The other parts of the house were not inspected.
