Description
The Market Cross beside the south gate to the Church of St. Ricarius is a former market cross, likely from the 17th century, that was relocated and restored in 1911. It is made of magnesian limestone and features two circular steps leading up to a square pedestal that transitions into an octagonal shape. The shaft is in two parts, square in section with stop-chamfered corners, and it has a moulded square cap on top with four arched faces, all adorned with carvings. The front and back faces display crosses, while the others are indecipherable. At the bottom of the shaft, there is a lettered brass plaque indicating that the cross was removed during the plague in 1644 and later restored by public subscription to commemorate the coronation of King George V in 1911.
