Description
The Factory, also known as Y Ffatri, is a two-storey L-plan range of buildings dating back to the 19th century. It features a house facing south and a rear east wing that runs parallel to the road, which was originally a mill. The house is constructed from uncoursed rock-faced squared granite stone, while the mill has rougher masonry and is built against the bank on the east side. Stone lintels are present throughout the structure, and the roofs are covered with slate, gabled at the west end of the house, with smaller slates on the mill and a hipped roof at the southeast angle.
The house has overhanging eaves on the west gable and two stone chimneys on the end walls. It is double-fronted to the south, featuring a central boarded door flanked by 16-pane hornless sash windows on each floor. To the right of the main stack, there is a single window range that appears to be part of the original build, which includes an outshut on the ground floor with a slate roof and a boarded door. Above this, there is a four-pane sash window. The rear north wall has three 16-pane sash windows at the first floor and one on each side of the center below.
The mill range faces east and includes ground floor stabling with four single doors—one at each end, two to the left of center, and broad double boarded doors to the right of center. The single doors have boarded overlights. The first floor features three 2-light casements. At the south end, adjacent to the house, there is a disused large water-wheel measuring 4.6 meters in diameter, with an iron rim and wooden spokes, marked 'Durie and Davis, Aberystwith 1870'. The wheel is over-shot and has head-stocks along with a 22.86 cm cast-iron water pipe extending from under the road. The north end wall has a large factory-style upper window with two 24-pane lights and a small shuttered window below it. The east rear wall has a corrugated-iron roof covering an added infill. The mill roof is supported by seven collar-trusses made of sawn pine and the building is currently in domestic use.
