Description
Wadlands Cottage, originally part of Wadlands Farmhouse, is a house that has been altered to form two dwellings. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of large dressed gritstone with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high with attics and features a two-cell direct-entry plan, entering into the second cell. It has a drip mould and an eaves cornice.
There are central paired doorways; the one on the right is original and has a monolithic lintel and jambs with a narrow chamfered surround, while the similar door on the left lacks the chamfer. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned types with ovolo-moulded mullions. The first cell, which serves as a parlour, has a four-light window with a matching window above, while the second cell, known as the housebody, has a five-light window with a similar window above. The gables are coped with kneelers and feature tall, well-finished end stacks. There are also two mid-20th century flat-roofed dormers. The rear and right-hand return have three-light windows beside inserted doorways.
Inside, the housebody contains stop-chamfered spine beams. The front chambers retain their original elaborately-moulded plaster cornices that run around the walls and encase the spine beams.
