Description
West Royd is a large house dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of ashlar and has a Welsh blue-slate roof. The house is two storeys in height, with a three-storey tower. The front elevation has three bays, and is asymmetrical in design. The first bay is gabled with a canted bay window to the ground floor, featuring an embattled parapet. Above this is a two-light chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould, stepped over a recessed panel and coping. The tall, central tower projects forward and contains a pilastered doorcase with a round-headed doorway, a keystone, entablature, and cornice surmounted by an achievement of arms. The first floor of the tower has a narrow light with a stepped dripmould; the second floor has a sharply-pointed window on each face. Corner turrets have spires, and a steeply-pitched belvedere is topped with fish-scale tiles and a wrought-iron corona. The third bay has a projecting two-light bay window with a brattished parapet; above is a single light under a dormer with a coped gable and kneelers. The right-hand return facade has two gables, similar to the entrance front. The left-hand return is of six bays with a gable over the second and third bays and dormers to the fifth and sixth bays. Other windows are mullioned. Two ridge stacks are visible on this wing, along with one other stack. The interior, only partially inspected, features decorative plaster cornices in the entrance hall and one room. The house is set within a public park.
