Description
This is an early 18th-century house, later altered in the mid-19th century to create cottages. It is constructed of large dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The building is two stories high and originally featured a three-room through-passage plan. A contemporary gabled porch to the west, with coped kneelers, contains a two-light chamfered mullioned window. The main house section retains a chamfered mullioned window originally composed of eight lights. All other windows are sash windows, either single-light or two-light, with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills. The doorways have monolithic jambs. To the rear is a projecting two-story section with a double chamfered mullioned window of four lights to the ground floor, positioned at right angles to the through-passage doorway, which has composite jambs and a stop-chamfered surround. There are four chimney stacks, one backing onto the through-passage. Inside the original housebody, you’ll find scarf-jointed spine-beams and evidence of a former bressumer. It also contains a stone hearth with a timber post and a segmental arched fireplace featuring a moulded surround.
