Description

Scar Bottom Cottages is a house from the early 18th century that was converted into two cottages in the early 19th century and has now returned to single occupancy. The building is constructed of large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and consists of two cells with quoins.

The first cell has an inserted doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a 4-light double chamfered mullioned window. Above this, on the first floor, is a 5-light window. The second cell has an original doorway with tie-stone jambs and a flat arched lintel with a chamfered surround to the left of a 5-light window, which also has a 5-light window above it on the first floor. Above the door is a basket arched light with a chamfered surround. All windows retain their original small paned leaded light windows.

On the left-hand return wall, there is a 2-light window that lacks a mullion, with a similar window above it on the first floor. The building has a coped gable with moulded kneelers and a stack. There is another stack that was originally a gable stack before later attached cottages were built, which are excluded from this listing.

Inside, the division wall between the two rooms is made of large dressed stone blocks and has a jetty out to support the ceiling beams, which are stop-chamfered. One window features an engraved pane that reads: "Miss Hannah Mitchell: Feb.y 3rd 1814".
