Description

The Manchester and Leeds Railway passenger stair tower at Mytholmroyd Station is a mid-19th century building that serves as a booking hall and stair tower for railway passengers. It features rock-faced stone on the ground floor and hammer-dressed stone above, topped with a hipped slate roof. The three-storey tower provides access to the railway line at a high level and has a symmetrical three-bay facade facing the road. The entrance is marked by a doorway flanked by Tuscan pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice. On either side of the doorway are windows with projecting sills and lintels supported by consoles. The first-floor windows have a similar style but feature segmental lintels, while the second-floor windows are topped with stilted arched lintels. The left-hand return wall includes three bays of similar windows and two doorways in the central bay, one of which is blocked.

Inside, there is a central stairwell with stone steps supported by four tall cast iron columns. The right-hand return wall contains a passenger waiting room at platform level on the second floor, featuring four bays each with projecting stilted arched lintels on consoles, and windows on either side of the central doorways. The four cast iron columns have decorative fretted brackets that support a wooden canopy at eaves level, which is covered by a separate hipped slate roof. This building is a prominent feature in the town.
