Description
The Throstle Nest Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century, situated on Nest Lane, Mytholmroyd. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building has a half-aisle to the rear, with a single-cell, two-storey kitchen wing projecting at right angles to form a stubby T-shape. The original plan comprised three rooms arranged linearly with a through passage.
The first two rooms (parlour and housebody) have double-chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor: the parlour window has six lights and the housebody window ten. Above these are chamfered mullioned windows to the first floor, each with four lights. The through-passage doorway has a Tudor arched lintel inscribed 'H S 1 7 9 9' and a stop-chamfered surround extending to form spandrels. The service end of the building features a pair of chamfered mullioned windows which have been combined into one long window on the ground floor, with a two-light window above on the first floor. A stepped string course runs continuously along the ground floor windows.
The return walls have coped gables with moulded kneelers. A stack with offsets and coupled flues, indicating a heated upper chamber, is located on the left return wall. To the right of this stack is a single chamfered arched light. The rear elevation has a continuous string course and includes a six-light chamfered mullioned window to the left of the through-passage doorway, featuring a Tudor arched lintel, sunken spandrels, and a chamfered surround. The jamb of this window is inscribed "H C”. The kitchen wing projects, and has a three-light double window dated 1792 with chamfered mullions, label stops and initials "H" and "N.” There is also a three-light chamfered mullioned window above it on the first floor. A stack with a coped gable and kneelers is present as well. Aisle elevations show a five-light chamfered mullioned window, and a former three-light window has been altered to form a doorway. An attic window, two lights wide and chamfered, is positioned above it. Another stack is situated backing onto the through passage.
Internally, the housebody contains scarf jointed spine beams and evidence of a farmer’s bressumer. The rear kitchen has a segmental arched fireplace with a moulded surround.
