Description

Eshaldwell Brewery is an entrance block and offices associated with a former brewery, built in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone and features stone slate roofs. It has a roughly L-shaped plan that forms the north and east sides of a forecourt.

The structure is two storeys tall and designed in a Classical style. The main block, located on the east side facing the road, has a slightly projecting center with a pediment. This center includes a segmental-arched carriageway, a lunette in the pediment, and a small bellcote with a windvane on the roof. The right-hand end of the main block also projects and is pedimented, featuring a blind oeil-de-boeuf in the pediment. An impost band runs out from the entrance arch as a sill-band, with two square windows on each side at the first floor. There are three similar windows at the ground floor to the left, while the openings to the right have been altered.

The north range of the building is also L-shaped. The first part consists of a pedimented two-bay wagon-house that faces inwards, featuring coupled segmental-arched wagon doors at the ground floor and two windows above with altered glazing. The left corner has rusticated quoins that continue as banded rustication on the two-bay return wall, which includes four-pane sash windows. The second part, set back, is an office that also faces inwards, with a pedimented front and return walls. This section has a three-bay front with a central door, two windows at the ground floor, and three above, along with a blind oeil-de-boeuf in the pediment. The return wall features a round-headed blind arch. At the time of the survey in 1986, the building was in a state of dilapidation.
