Description
House. Built in 1774 by John Carr of York for Richard Green. It is a double-depth plan house with a symmetrical facade of seven bays, featuring a three-bay canted projection at the front and two at the rear. The house has two storeys. The front doorway is up three steps with iron railings and a curtail, and is framed by a moulded architrave and pediment resting on consoles. A first-floor band runs across the facade, and the windows are 12-pane sashes set within moulded architraves; the ground-floor windows have a sill band and moulded cornices, while those above have balustraded aprons rising from the band. There is a modillioned eaves cornice and a hipped, two-span roof with chimneys on the rear ridge and end walls. The return walls are rendered, with a doorway on the left return. The rear elevation has flanking canted bays, two French windows with square overlights in the centre, ground-floor windows without glazing bars, and 12-pane sashes above, all with balustrades mirroring those at the front.
Inside, the central hall contains an open-well staircase with scrolled brackets and stick balusters. The dining room features a painted ceiling decorated with naturalistic flowers and birds in a late 18th century style.
