Description
Eshald Mansion is a house, built in the early to mid-19th century and now divided into flats. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof. The main block is two storeys high, with three bays by four, while the rear service range is three storeys high, with three bays by two. The main block features a plinth, giant pilasters, an eaves band and cornice that projects over the pilasters, and a parapet with sections of balustrade. The balusters are square, and above the pilasters are pediments on coupled pilasters or, at the corners, round-arched panels with a palmette motif. The windows are largely sashes with glazing bars, with some replacements, and larger windows on the ground floor; the service range has six-pane sashes to the second floor.
The entrance front has a central Ionic portico with a frieze, cornice, and a part-balustraded blocking course, fronting a pilastered doorcase with a 20th-century door. Console-shouldered, pedimented architraves frame the flanking windows, bracketed architraves frame the first-floor windows, and a cornice frames the central window. Several multi-flued, corniced stacks are present. The returns of the main range are in a matching style; the end ground-floor windows of the left return mirror the front, with the central windows flanked by paired pilasters under a frieze with wreaths. The corresponding right return windows have a reversed arrangement.
The service range has a plinth, cornice, and a blocking course. The windows have stone lintels and projecting sills; several sashes have been replaced and some windows inserted to the rear. Doorways are present on each side (two on the right return), with original doorways to the rear and right return with pilasters, frieze, and cornice. The right return also has a tripartite window with a monolithic lintel. The interior has not been inspected.
