Description
This is a barn or cowhouse located approximately 20 meters west of Rigton Farmhouse, likely dating from the mid 16th century with alterations from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a timber-framed interior and features a stone slate roof. The barn has six openings and quoins. Bays 1, 2, 4, and 6 contain windows with monolithic lintels, while bay 3 has a doorway that was originally wider. Bay 5 features a low cart-entry with a wooden lintel and double doors. There are buildings attached to either end, but they are not of special interest.
Inside, the barn consists of four bays. It has inclined posts on padstones with mortices for wall ties and braces, which include long straight braces to the arcade-plates, wall plates, and tie beams. The braces to the tie beams have connecting spurs from the posts that are halved over the braces. Single angle struts support single purlins, and the principal rafters have a high collar that carries a square cut ridge tree. This barn is an unusual timber-framed building that is unique within the region.
