Description

Smallfield Cottage is a cottage dating from around 1800, with a slightly later addition. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a roof made of Welsh blue-slate and pantile. The building has a two-cell direct-entry into the first cell plan and is double-depth, standing two storeys tall with two first-floor windows. The central doorway is topped with a monolithic lintel that is dressed with false voussoirs. The flanking windows also have similar lintels, projecting sills, and small-pane Yorkshire sashes, with metal-casement windows above. The cottage has coped gables with kneelers, an ashlar end stack on the right, and a large rendered external stack on the left end, which is partly obscured by a lean-to that includes a single Yorkshire sash with a lintel and projecting sill, topped with a pantile roof.

Inside, the doorway opens against the staircase, and there is a door beneath the stair featuring raised-and-fielded panels. The windows are fitted with panelled shutters and window seats.

In the 19th century, Smallfield Cottage served as a tailor's and draper's shop. It is included in the listing for its group value.
