Description
Bardsey Lodge is a house dated 1729 and initialled "S:A" for Samuel Abbott, with early 19th-century alterations. It is built of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof and has a three-cell plan, standing two storeys high with a cellar. The front features four first-floor windows and quoins. The slightly off-centre doorway has monolithic jambs and a six-panel door, with an earlier blocked doorway to the right that has a dated lintel. The windows are four-pane sash types set in flush wood architraves, with monolithic lintels and projecting sills. To the immediate left of the door is a long narrow window with an eight-pane fixed light. There are several narrow blocked slits, likely former ventilators, suggesting the building's previous agricultural use. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there is a stack to the right along with another ridge stack.
The rear, or garden front, has an ashlar plinth, and the second bay features a tall doorway with monolithic jambs, a casement-moulded cornice, and a glazed overlight, which is obscured by a wood and glass porch. Above this doorway is a window with a raised surround and console blocks. On either side, there are four-pane sash windows similar to those at the front, complete with lintels and projecting sills. The interior has not been inspected. Adjacent to the house is a deep well.
