Description

Ghyll Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century. It incorporates remains of an earlier timber-framed house within, and the rear was altered in the mid-18th century, with a mid-20th century alteration and extension. The house is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof. Originally a two-cell plan with a through-passage, it now has three windows on the first floor. A central doorway is sheltered by an open wooden latticed porch, which has a two-light window above. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned, with almost square reveals. The outer bays have four-light windows on each floor; the ground floor windows have lowered sills and renewed central mullions, creating two tall lights. An ashlar stack is present on the left gable, and an external stack on the right gable has offsets and an ashlar top with a moulded cornice. A sympathetic single-storey extension was added to the left corner in the 20th century. The rear of the house, which faces the street, has a central doorway that was altered to a window. Other bays have windows with lintels, projecting sills, and small-pane Yorkshire sash windows.

The housebody on the left features a large fireplace with a Tudor-arched lintel and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. On the first floor, evidence remains of the earlier timber-framed house, including a tie beam supported on a post with mortices for a brace. The roof structure consists of a truss with single angle struts clasping purlins and collar rafters; the collars are missing. This roof is of a similar character to that of the nearby Oak Tree Cottage.
