Description
Nos. 35 and 35A Albion Place is a building dating from 1900, designed by architect WH Thorp. Originally serving as YMCA premises with shops and offices, it now houses shops, offices, and a restaurant. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with rusticated detailing on the first and second floors, and features a slate roof and a modillion eaves cornice. It stands four storeys tall and has five bays on the corner site, with a four-bay facade facing Albion Street.
The architecture is in an elaborate Baroque style. The central bay features an entrance flanked by paired columns and a broken segmental pediment topped with swagged urns. There is a Venetian stair window on the first floor and a Diocletian window on the second. Both facades include plate-glass shop windows and a balustraded parapet above. The outer bays on the first and second floors have canted bay windows, with a gabled three-light window above. The windows are stone mullion and transom types, along with four-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected. WH Thorp is also known for remodelling the Oxford Place Methodist Church and designing the Art Gallery in Leeds.
