Description

No. 14 Commercial Street is a shop built in 1868 by architect George Corson for the chemists Harvey and Reynolds. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and constructed from ashlar stone with a slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall and features three stepped gables adorned with wrought-iron finials, with a weather vane positioned over the central gable.

On the first floor, there are round-arched windows supported by polished shafts and columns with carved capitals, along with a continuous drip mould above. The second floor showcases three pointed-arch windows, each with two lights, a carved capital on the central column, and a carved tympanum that includes a circular opening. A carved string course runs at sill level. The ground floor has a modern shop front.

Although the interior has not been inspected, Corson is recognized as one of the most significant architects in Leeds, known for designing the Grand Theatre and the Municipal Buildings. Another of his smaller works is No. 17A East Parade, where the original Gothic-arched ground floor is documented in photographs.
