Description

Nos. 8 and 9 Commercial Street, along with Nos. 2 and 4 Lands Lane, are early 20th-century shops and a restaurant located on a corner site. The building is constructed of terracotta with a slate roof and features a three-window bay at the corner (No. 9), with paired windows on the one- and three-bay facades facing Commercial Street and Lands Lane. It stands three storeys tall with attics and is designed in the Free Classical style, showcasing terracotta moulded detailing.

The ground floor has been altered but still retains its original divisions and a round-arched entry leading to the upper floors on the right. The first floor includes a canted bay window at the corner, while the remaining windows have segmental voussoired arches and original two-light frames. The second floor features mullion and transom windows along with single-light windows, with ornate shields on the panels between them. Segmental pilasters between the windows rise to a modillion eaves cornice, which is missing over the corner bay. The building is topped with a balustraded parapet and cone-shaped pinnacles that front pedimented dormers. The bays one and three of the Lands Lane frontage have paired sash windows and terracotta ornamentation with pinnacles. The interior has not been inspected.
