Description
This building, known as Nos. 2 and 2B Gillygate, is a pair of shops and flats dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of terracotta and red brick, topped with a slate roof.
The exterior features a symmetrical facade that rises three storeys and consists of three bays. The ground floor has shopfronts in the outer bays, which are framed with moulded terracotta surrounds and have tiled sections below their cornices. The central bay includes a carriageway with a basket arch made of terracotta, supported by a cornice on brackets.
On the upper floors, there are two-storey canted oriel windows, with additional flanking lights in the outer bays. The first-floor windows feature two transoms and glazing bars in their upper lights, while the second-floor windows also have glazing bars in their upper lights. Between the storeys, the oriels are adorned with relief panels, although the panel on the right-hand oriel is missing and others show signs of damage.
Additionally, there are cast-iron rainwater hoppers and downpipes flanking the central bay. The building has chimneys positioned in front of the ridge on the left and between the second and third bays. The interior has not been inspected.
