Description
12 and 12A Gillygate is a house that has been converted into shops and flats. It dates from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a pantiled roof, featuring an L-shaped plan.
The exterior consists of three storeys and five bays. The second floor originally had five windows, which were reduced to three in the early 19th century. The windows are glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick flat arches. On the ground floor, there are two shopfronts with timber fascias and recessed central doorways. Between these shopfronts is a doorway with a door made of six raised and fielded panels, an overlight, an architrave, and a dentilled modillion cornice hood supported by console brackets. The facade includes a band above the first floor windows and a modillion gutter cornice. To the left of the central bay, there is a lead rainwater hopper and downpipe. A chimney is located behind the ridge towards the right. The interior has not been inspected.
