Description
3 and 5 Gillygate are two houses that have been converted into shops and flats. They were built in 1797 by Thomas Wolstenholme, a carver, and were altered and restored around 1980 with new shopfronts. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a pantiled roof, following a double-depth plan.
The exterior is symmetrical, standing four storeys high with three bays. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with the central bay's windows having rubbed brick flat arches, although these are blind. On the first floor, the outer bays have three-light bowed windows separated by attached columns, adorned with swagged friezes. The left-hand window displays some carved detail, while the right-hand one is a simpler 20th-century replica. The second floor features windows with three round-headed lights topped with cornices, and the third floor has Diocletian windows with timber mullions. The ground floor showcases 20th-century timber shopfronts, with paired recessed doorways in the center that have fanlights and panelled reveals; one doorway is original while the other is a 20th-century replica. The buildings also have gable chimneys.
The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate the presence of two original staircases and many original fittings on the upper floors. These include pilastered doorcases with overdoors, fireplaces decorated with garlands and urns, and pilastered frames for the bay windows, all of which are fine examples of Thomas Wolstenholme's decorative style.
