Description

The Statue of William Etty, located in Exhibition Square, York, was created in 1911 by GW Milburn. This life-size statue depicts the artist in a cloak, holding a palette and brush, standing in front of a badly defaced representation of Bootham Bar. The statue is raised on a tall pedestal featuring a moulded cornice with egg-and-dart mouldings. A plaque on the pedestal reads: "William Etty Born in York 1787 Elected Royal Academician 1828 Died 1849". Etty played a significant role, alongside other local and national figures, in preventing the demolition of Bootham Bar in 1832.
