Description
The railings and gates fronting the forecourt of The King's Manor in York date from around 1900. They consist of carriage and foot gates, railings, and piers that form the north-eastern boundary of the forecourt. The gates and railings are made of cast and wrought iron and are set on a low moulded stone wall, with stone piers at each end. The railings are square in section and feature open panels with scrollwork, coupled volutes, and twists as finials. The gate piers are similar but taller, square on plan, and have trefoil-headed sunk-panelled sides with moulded cornices beneath flat caps. The piers incorporate pendant armorial shields on two faces, which are mostly badly defaced, except for one that displays a sun in splendour, located next to The City Art Gallery.
