Description

Number 21 is a house with area railings, built in 1839 and altered in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone details and has a slate roof, along with wrought-iron railings. The building has three storeys over a basement and features two first-floor windows. There are stone steps with moulded treads leading to the left entrance, which has a plain door with a diamond-paned overlight set in a stone surround with pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice. The windows have stone sills, a continuous sill band on the first floor, and painted wedge lintels. The basement window is blocked, while the ground floor has a plate-glass sash. The first-floor windows likely have original sashes with 12 and 16 panes, and the second floor has sashes with 6 and 8 panes. The interior has not been inspected. The railings include a plain handrail for the steps, and the basement railings feature pointed ball finials. Historical records indicate that in 1841, the house was occupied by George Aitchison, an assistant overseer of the poor, along with four others. By 1851, Aitchison had taken in lodgers, including architect George Reid Corson and his brother, who had moved to Leeds from Dumfries.
