House with area railings. 1839, altered late C19. Red brick with stone details, slate roof, wrought-iron railings. 3 storeys over basement, 2 first-floor windows. Stone steps with moulded treads to left entrance: plain door with diamond-paned overlight in stone surround with pilasters, entablature and cornice. Fenestration: stone sills, continuous sill band to 1st floor, painted wedge lintels; blocked basement window, plate-glass sash to ground floor, probably original sashes with 12 and 16 panes to 1st floor and with 6 and 8 panes to 2nd. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings: plain handrail to steps, basement railings have pointed ball finials. The 1841 census shows that the house was then occupied by George Aitchison, assistant overseer of the poor, and 4 others; in 1851 the same occupier had taken in lodgers, the architect George Reid Corson and his brother who had moved to Leeds from Dumfries.
