Description
Leeds Grammar School Chapel is a school chapel built in 1868 by E.M. Barry. It is constructed from coursed gritstone and features a decorative fish-scale slate roof with a steep pitch, showcasing the Gothic Revival style. The chapel has gabled ends and buttresses that are set back from the corners, with open corner turrets. A quatrefoil pierced parapet adds to its decorative elements, along with the window tracery, which includes a 5-light east window and 2-light windows on the sides. The entrance at the 'west' end has paired doors with decorated strap hinges, attached granite columns, a deep hoodmoulding, a rose window above, gable copings, and cross finials. Inside, the chapel consists of 6 bays with attached columns, and there are 4 steps leading up to the choir. The choir stalls are carved by Thomas of Kilburn, and the west end gallery features a panelled front with trefoil piercings, along with original benches.
