Description

Gipton Spa is an open-air bath with origins dating back to the 17th century, likely rebuilt around 1800. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and features a stone slate roof. The building is a gabled bath house with a high wall on the south side that encloses a plunge bath measuring approximately 3 meters square and 1.75 meters deep, with a platform on three sides. The bath house has an entrance at the southwest end, showcasing restored quoined jambs, a moulded string, a circular light in the gable, and moulded gable coping. A small metal plaque on the door lintel reads: 'GIPTON SPA/ This bath-house was built in 1671/ Ice cold water from a nearby spring/ was conducted here to a sunken bath/ Also inside was a small fireplace/ to sweat the patients after bathing'. The previous listing description noted an inscribed stone stating: 'Hoc faecit Edwardus Waddington de Gleadhowe Annovae Domini 1671', which was not seen during the review. The roof has been partially robbed.
