Description

This is an early 19th-century country house, now an annex to Park Lane College, located on Harehills Lane in Potternewton, Leeds. The building is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a roof that is not visible. It has two storeys and three bays, displaying a window arrangement of 3, 1, and 3 windows. The central entrance features a glazed door within a plain surround, incorporating margin lights, and is sheltered by a semicircular portico supported by four Ionic columns. An entablature and cornice sit above the columns, with a wrought-iron balcony railing positioned above. The first-floor central window is a sash with margin lights set within an architrave, featuring an entablature and cornice. Flanking ground and first-floor windows are sash windows containing 18 and 15 panes respectively, with continuous sill bands. The building is finished with an eaves cornice and a balustraded parapet that has an oval recess in the centre. Four evenly spaced banded stacks are present. The interior is reported to retain original plasterwork, including modillion ceiling cornices and moulded door surrounds. Originally built for James Brown and initially named 'Harehills Grove', the house later became 'Harehills', the residence of John Jowitt, a Quaker industrialist.
