Description
Number 5 Newton Grove is a large house, now used as offices, built between 1860 and 1870. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and has two storeys and an attic over a basement. The building features a symmetrical three-window facade with a pediment in the Italianate style, accented by corner pilasters. Stone steps lead up to the central door, which has a fanlight and is framed by a pilaster surround with console brackets and a pediment that includes a name plaque. On either side of the entrance are canted bay windows with stone mullions, a cornice, and a blocking course.
On the first floor, there is a central four-pane sash window set within a segmental-arched architrave, supported by sill brackets and consoles that hold up a triangular pediment. The outer windows are paired round-arched lancets in a similar architrave, topped with an overall segmental pediment. The central attic window features a small Venetian design within an open pediment. The building also has a moulded eaves band and cornice, with stacks at each end. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records from 1870 indicate that the house was occupied by Miss Elizabeth Jowitt.
