Description

Albion House is a large house built around 1835, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features ashlar and stucco construction with a slate roof. The building has a heavy modillion cornice and a blocking course. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with the centre bay projecting slightly and finished in rusticated stucco, topped with a parapet and cornice. The first floor includes a central three-light window framed by pilasters and a pediment, while the other first-floor windows are set in moulded architraves. The ground floor has two semicircular bays with entablatures and curved sashes, and a central doorway flanked by attached columns that support a pediment, above which is a semicircular fanlight. The glazing bars have been replaced with plate glass throughout. The interior has not been inspected. Albion House is one of a row of three houses built in New Leeds, on land sold by Earl Cowper for villas outside the town centre. The development was not successful, and by 1847 only a small number of plots had been built on, contributing to Sir Walter Scott's financial troubles.
