Description

No. 98 Chapel Town Road is a house built around 1835, now serving as dance studios. It features red brick in Flemish bond with finely coursed stone bands and front steps. The building has a shallow pitch hipped slate roof, most of which is missing, and reduced-height end stacks. It is two storeys tall with cellars and has three bays, including a restored six-panel door. The windows are plate-glass sashes, and there is a short flight of steps with moulded risers leading to a central entrance that is framed by a portico supported by Tuscan columns, which holds an entablature, cornice, and blocking course. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches and a continuous stone sill band, while the eaves are deep and bracketed. At the rear, the upper-floor windows retain glazing bars. On the left side, there is a small wrought-iron balcony on the first floor, and the right side has two blocked ground-floor openings. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that internal walls were removed during the conversion to studios. Historically, this house is located in the southwest corner of the 'Leeds New Town' development of the Squire's Pasture estate, which was sold by the 5th Earl Cowper in 1825. The development aimed to provide large houses away from the polluted city center, but after the partnership's bankruptcy in 1828, the Earl repurchased the land, leading to slow construction. This house was one of the few completed by 1847 and later served as the communal offices for the United Hebrew Congregation before becoming the studios for the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.
