Description

Northwood House is a bank building, now used as computer salesrooms, located on North Street in Sheepscar, Leeds. It was constructed in the late 19th century and altered in the 20th century. Designed by William Bakewell for the London, City and Midland Bank, the building features an ashlar exterior and a slate roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and occupies a prominent corner site. The façade consists of two bays with a canted corner entrance and four bays with a former entrance to the chambers on the right.

The architectural style is eclectic Classical. The entrance has recessed glazed double doors set in a wide moulded archway, which includes a keystone and console brackets, with paired oval lights above. To the far right, there is a more modest doorway with a single oval light. The first-floor window in the corner bay is framed by an architrave and topped with a scrolled pediment. The building features a deep eaves cornice supported by carved stone brackets, a clock turret with a scrolled base, and pedimented gabled clock faces topped with an ogee dome and ball finial. The ground-floor windows are designed as 3-light mullion and 2 transoms within round-arched recesses, with sill moulding and a string course on the first floor. The first floor also has 3-light mullion and transom windows with pediments above, along with pedimented dormer windows and tall banded chimney stacks. The interior has not been inspected, but the building was illustrated in 'The Architect' magazine around 1880-1890.
