Description
Nos. 92, 94, and 96 on North Street in Leeds served as the entrance range to the Smithfield Ironworks, built around 1848 to 1850. The building has been restored and altered around 1990. It features red brick with painted stone dressings and hipped slate roofs, designed in the Italianate style. The facade consists of three, one, three, one, three bays, flanked by rusticated pilasters, with cornices at the eaves and over the ground floor.
The central section has three windows in a three-storey bay topped with a heavy modillion cornice. Above this is a clock tower with rusticated quoin pilasters, a heavy modillion cornice, and a lead-clad pyramid roof with a wind vane. On the ground floor, bays two and four contain elliptical-arched carriageways supported by ornate console brackets, while the central round-headed doorway features a keyblock and paired pilasters. The original Victorian shop and office windows have been replaced with 20th-century glazing. The upper floors have round-headed windows set in moulded architraves with keyblocks, and there are paired windows on the second floor in the center; a canted bay window at the left end has been removed. This building was formerly the premises of Thomas Green and Sons, who were developers and manufacturers of lawn mowers. The interior has not been inspected.
