Description

The wall, gates, and piers located to the north, east, and west of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds are likely from around 1835, with the gateways to the synagogue added around 1930. The structure is made of coursed gritstone, with snecked stone used for the gate piers and iron gates. It serves as the front wall for No. 98 Chapeltown Road and encloses the synagogue grounds on three sides, varying in height from approximately 2.5 meters on the west side to 1 meter, ramped, on the north side. The coping on the west is flat, while it is rounded on the north and east sides. The square-section piers feature grid-pattern ironwork on the two-leaf gates, which have a Star of David motif in the center of each. This boundary wall was likely constructed as part of the grid of streets planned for the Squire's Pasture Estate in 1828.
