Description
The front boundary wall and gateway with piers to number 36 on Chamberlain Street in Wells dates from around 1780. It is constructed of local stone that is roughly squared and laid in a random pattern, with ashlar dressings. The wall stands approximately 1.2 meters high and stretches about 20 meters in length. It features flat dressed copings that are swept up at each end where the wall meets numbers 34 and 38, as well as at the central gateway. The gateway is marked by square ashlar piers that have plinths and moulded pyramidal caps, with a 20th-century metal gate. This wall is significant for its contribution to the setting of number 36 and enhances the overall street scene.
