Description
Newton House is a large house built around 1835, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features ashlar stonework and a low-pitched hipped slate roof. The building has a cornice, parapet, and quoin pilasters. It is two storeys high with a window arrangement of 1:3:1, where the central three windows slightly project and the ground floor windows are set in elliptical-headed recesses. The central doorway is flanked by attached Tuscan columns that support a heavy entablature. The glazing bar sashes have been restored. At the time of the survey, the building was in the process of being converted into hostel accommodation. Newton House is one of a row of three houses constructed in New Leeds on land sold by Earl Cowper for villas outside the town center. The development was not successful, and by 1847, only a small number of plots had been built on; this failure contributed to Sir Walter Scott's financial troubles.
