GV II

Large house. c1835, altered C20. Ashlar, low-pitched hipped slate roof. Cornice, parapet, quoin pilasters. 2 storeys, 1:3:1 windows, centre 3 in slight projection, ground floor in elliptical-headed recesses. Central doorway with attached Tuscan columns supporting heavy entablature. Restored glazing bar sashes. Conversion to hostel accommodation in progress at time of survey. INTERIOR: not inspected. One of the row of 3 houses built in New Leeds on land sold by Earl Cowper for villas outside the town centre. The speculation was unsuccessful and only a small number of plots was built on by 1847; the failure of the venture contributed to Sir Walter Scott's insolvency.
