Description
The Bath House, located at 43 Bath Street in Lancaster, is a former bath house that has been converted into a house. It was built in 1803, with a mid-19th century extension and 20th century alterations. The building was designed by Joseph Gandy. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the other sides are constructed from roughly coursed rubble with plain quoins. It features a hipped roof covered with concrete tiles.
The original front, which is now the back elevation, has two storeys and three bays, adorned with a simple hollow moulded cornice and a blocking course. The windows have plain reveals and late 20th century casements, while the entrance door is concealed behind a two-bay mid-19th century addition. The facade of the extension facing the street has two storeys and two bays, with an ogee-profiled cornice. Its windows also have plain reveals and late 20th century casements with glazing bars. There are two chimneys at each end of the ridge, positioned at right angles to one another, and a bell is attached to the chimney closest to the road.
Inside, it is reputed that the original bath exists beneath the floor. The Bath House was built by 50 subscribers who each contributed 10 shillings. Gandy's design for the bath house was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1806.
