Description

LANCASTER

SD4861 BATH STREET 1685-1/5/15 (West side) No.43 Bath House

II

Former bath house, now house. 1803, with mid C19 extension and C20 alterations. Designed by Joseph Gandy. Sandstone ashlar on the front, and roughly coursed rubble with plain quoins elsewhere. Hipped roof with concrete tiles. 8-flue chimney stack parallel to the original front, and 4-flue stack on ridge of the extension. The original front (now the back elevation) has 2 storeys and 3 bays with a simple hollow moulded cornice and blocking course, the windows have plain reveals and late C20 casements, and the door is hidden behind what is probably a 2-bay mid C19 addition. Towards the street the facade of the extension has 2 storeys and 2 bays with an ogee-profiled cornice, its windows have plain reveals and late C20 casements with glazing bars. 2 chimneys, at each end of the ridge at right angles to each other. A bell is attached to the chimney nearest the road. INTERIOR: original bath reputed to exist beneath floor. HISTORY: built by 50 subscribers who paid 10 shillings each. The design for the bath house was exhibited by Gandy at the Royal Academy in 1806. (Colvin H: A Biographical Dictionary of British Architects: London: 1978-: 328).
