Description
The perimeter walls and gateway of the Roman Catholic Cemetery were built between 1849 and 1850 by E.G. Paley. They are constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The walls on the north and east sides feature roughly-dressed triangular copings, while the wall on the west side, which includes the gateway, has a roll-topped coping. The gateway is covered with overlapping sandstone flags and is flanked by two gables that have wedge-shaped coping stones, creating a stepped appearance. The archways are pointed and chamfered in two orders, complete with hoodmoulds. On the west side, there are gates made of timber and iron. Inside, a single transverse rib supports the vault, and there is an inscribed plaque on the side wall that reads: 'According to the pious and charitable wish of the Revd Thomas Abbot, who died... Feb. 18th 1904... it was directed that four masses be celebrated in the Church of St Peter... each year...'.
