Description

The Cathedral School, built in 1897, is a Roman Catholic school designed by Paley and Austin in the Gothic Revival style. It is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble and features slate roofs with coped gables. The building is situated on sloping ground and has four gables facing the road. The right-hand pair of gables, which originally belonged to the School Room and Classroom block, are wider and taller, featuring three windows and two windows respectively. Each window has two trefoiled lights with a transom and a quatrefoil or cinquefoil in the head under the chamfered pointed outer arch.

To the left, two further gables project slightly forward and are two storeys high. Each of these has a similar two-light window in a pointed outer arch, with a transom at the centre of the first floor, flanked by two-light mullioned windows. On the ground floor to the left, there are two blocked segmental-arched openings that were originally for a covered playground. Under the right-hand gable, there are two three-light mullioned windows next to a slightly projecting porch that features a moulded doorway with a hoodmould and a depressed two-centred arch.

In front of the school, there is a low wall made of snecked rubble with ashlar copings and piers, along with cast-iron railings. This wall curves to follow the road and ends at the west with a taller wall that surrounds a chamfered pointed doorway with a hoodmould. The doorway has a stepped coping and features a shield carved with a crown and monogram above the arch. The school is part of a group of buildings associated with St Peter's Roman Catholic Cathedral on St Peter's Road.
