Description

St Walburga's Convent is a Roman Catholic convent built between 1851 and 1853, designed by E.G. Paley in the Gothic Revival style. The building is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has an L-shaped main structure with a cross-wing on the left and a rear corridor that connects to the Convent Chapel of St Peter's Cathedral on St Peter's Road.

The convent is two storeys high, with windows that all have chamfered mullions. The heads of the window lights are either trefoiled or have shouldered arches. The main range consists of three bays, featuring a single-storey canted bay window in the central bay and a four-light window to the right. The upper windows are through-eaves coped gabled dormers with configurations of two, three, and two lights. A moulded pointed doorway is located in the left-hand bay, and there is a single-light squint window at the angle with the cross-wing. The right-hand gable has chimneys and is coped with kneelers, positioned between the second and third bays.

The gable wall of the cross-wing includes a string course above two windows of two lights and a stepped three-light window beneath the coped gable. The left-hand return wall of the cross-wing has three bays, which include a single-storey canted bay window and dormers that light an attic storey.
