SD4861 BALMORAL ROAD 1685-1/5/14 (North side) St Walburga's Convent

GV II

Roman Catholic convent. 1851-3. Designed by EG Paley. Gothic Revival style. Snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roof. Main building L-plan with cross-wing at left, with a rear corridor connecting with the Convent Chapel of St Peter's Cathedral, St Peter's Road (qv). 2 storeys. The windows all have chamfered mullions and the heads of the lights are either trefoiled or have shouldered arches. Main range of 3 bays, with a single-storey canted bay window in the central bay, and a 4-light window to right. The upper windows are through-eaves coped gabled dormers of 2, 3 and 2 lights. The moulded pointed doorway is in the left-hand bay. At the left, across the angle with the cross-wing, is a single-light squint window. Chimneys on right-hand gable, which is coped with kneelers, and between 2nd and 3rd bays. The cross-wing gable wall has a string course above 2 windows of 2 lights and a stepped 3-light window below the coped gable. Its left-hand return wall is of 3 bays and includes a single-storey canted bay window, and dormers lighting an attic storey.
