Description
Cathedral House is a presbytery for the Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of St Peter, built between 1857 and 1859, with extensions made in 1895 and 1896. Designed by Edward Paley, it was later extended to the south by Austin and Paley. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. It is situated in front of a small cloister courtyard against the south side of the Cathedral.
The main range of the house faces west and consists of two storeys. It has a central two-storey canted bay window beneath a hipped roof. To the left, it connects to the Cathedral via a single-storey porch. The windows throughout the building have chamfered surrounds and mullions, with the lights featuring either trefoiled heads or depressed two-centred arches. The ground floor windows and those in the bay have transoms. To the left of the bay window, there are two bays with two-light windows, while to the right, there is a single bay with three-light windows. The gables are coped, and there are two chimneys on the ridge and one on the left-hand gable.
The addition by Austin and Paley is designed in a similar style and projects forward on the right side. It includes a chimney and a two-storey window turret at the angle with the main range. The gable facing west features a single-storey canted bay window with two transoms. On the south side, there is a two-storey projecting gabled wing that contains the doorway, which has a moulded pointed arch and a hoodmould.
