Description
The cross in the Roman Catholic cemetery was built in 1899 to replace an earlier cross designed by E.G. Paley in 1851, which was destroyed by a gale. It is made of sandstone ashlar and stands on two steps with an octagonal plan. The octagonal base features blind arcading with trefoiled arches supported by engaged shafts and is inscribed with the words: 'Apud Dominum misericordia et copiosa apud eum redemptio.' The tapering octagonal shaft has a moulded base and a cap that is carved with a lamb and an eagle. The cross itself displays a crucified Christ on the west face and Mary standing on the east face.
